Fashion Portfolio Shoot

Why I Chose Skip Studio at JUMP Boise for My Editorial Fashion Portfolio Shoot

As a Creative Director, when I’m building an editorial concept, I don’t start with the camera, lenses, or even the model.

I start with feeling.

I ask myself what emotion I want viewers to embody when they experience the work. For this editorial shoot, I knew I wanted something expressive, feminine, and emotionally charged — a visual story that felt immersive rather than posed.

This project was very personal to me as it represented a launch to my creative career here in Boise. Every detail mattered. Pre-production, Production, and Postproduction took us a full two and a half months.

Because I build worlds — not just sets — I needed a space that could hold intensity without overpowering it. A space that felt open, flexible, and creatively alive. Somewhere collaboration could breathe.

That’s exactly why I chose SKIP Studio at JUMP Boise.

The Planning & Collaboration Behind the Shoot

This shoot didn’t begin on production day. It began with relationships. I had previously worked with Holden Weiss and Aldis Garsvo during Summer 2025 through Dreamweaver Collective, where we created several short films together. Those collaborations built creative trust — and trust is everything when you’re attempting something ambitious.

When I began planning this editorial, I reached back out about potential collaborations and studio connections. Holden and Aldis connected me with Dan Beyer, who walked me through the application process for SKIP Studio at JUMP Boise.

The process itself felt intentional:

  • Submit an application

  • Await approval

  • Book time for testing and shoot days

  • Complete a required studio safety course

The safety course was incredibly informative. It reinforced that this wasn’t just a rental space — it was a professional creative environment that valued preparedness and care.

By the time shoot day arrived, the foundations had already been built.

My Creative Process :

My process included intentional world-building, narrative development, concept refinement, deliberate location selection, set styling, costuming, hair and makeup direction, model casting, movement choreography, lighting design, editorial framing, shot sequencing, and final postproduction curation.

I think about:

  • What does this story feel like in the body?

  • How does light move through it?

  • Where can the subject breathe?

  • What kind of environment allows spontaneity?

For editorial work especially, I need room for movement — physically and creatively. I don’t like rigid setups. I like evolution. The model shifts. The light changes. Styling adapts. The most powerful moments usually happen between the planned shots.

SKIP Studio gave us that freedom.

The open layout allowed us to build and break down seamlessly. We used natural light while mapping the space, then blocked it out completely to gain full control over mood and contrast.

Aldis served as both photographer and gaffer for this project — and truly elevated the technical execution. (He rules.) Because we had access to the right support and infrastructure, the JUMP team even installed ceiling support to accommodate a top light — a dramatic overhead source that cast directly downward to create sculptural shadows and a moody, immersive tone.

That level of collaboration elevates and production.

Art Direction & Resourcefulness

For flooring, I brought in large drapes from home and layered XL panels along the baseboards to create a controlled lighting environment. The goal was cohesion — no visual distractions, just subject and story.

During planning, Amanda Fitch, Programs Production Assistant at JUMP, stopped by. I asked if there might be florals available — and within minutes she led me to the props and costuming department and generously allowed us to borrow an entire bucket of flowers.

We scattered them across the floor to soften the intensity of the lighting and bring an organic femininity into the frame.

She even offered thoughtful aesthetic guidance that refined the final look.

That moment captures what made this experience special: collaboration wasn’t transactional — it was generous and authentic.

Why the Right Space Matters

When you’re creating something meaningful — whether it’s an editorial, a brand campaign, or a personal passion project — the space you choose becomes part of the narrative.

SKIP Studio didn’t just house our Euphoria Magazine shoot.

It supported the planning.

It strengthened the collaboration.

It elevated the execution.

And ultimately, it elevated the work.

That’s exactly what a great creative space should do. If you’re looking for a space to create, you have to check out SKIP Studio!
