Songs for Good

A Weekend of Music, Storytelling & Connection

JUMP welcomed actor, musician, and host of BYUtv’s Making Good, Kirby Heyborne, to Boise for a two-day event that brought community and local non-profits together through music, stories and compassion.

Kirby performed some of his original songs from the Making Good series during a family-friendly concert. The audience was also treated to a couple special screenings of two episodes that highlighted local non-profits. Kirby’s belief in the power of music is evident when you listen to the lyrics of his songs and witness the impact it makes on all those he shares them with. He believes music creates the most powerful connection, and each of his songs is rooted in love, service, and hope.

That night, his heart-felt presence and humor lit up the room, and the evening wrapped up with an engaging Q&A session where he shared behind-the-scenes stories and answered the audience’s questions about his journey, songwriting, and the highlighted non-profit’s mission.

The Blessing Bike and Sleep in Heavenly Peace were the 2 local non-profits that Kirby chose to highlight that evening. Both organizations took the stage to share their missions. From building beds for kids who don’t have one, to gifting adaptive bikes to seniors and others with mobility challenges, the evening was one of great inspiration highlighting just a few examples of people who are making a difference in the world. Toward the end of the night, the original founders of The Blessing Bike (Jill and Wade Houser) passed on the torch to new leaders, Dan and Kelly Canfield of John and Junes Mission. Both organizations were happy to share their passion with our community, and our community was thrilled to learn more.

The following day, Kirby returned to our INSPIRE Studio for two interactive songwriting workshops where participants learned about the power of a good brainstorm, the importance of melodic and lyrical hooks, and how to create a great chorus that is memorable, simple and universal. Participants of varied musical abilities raved about the experience and found great inspiration and joy collaborating with each other to create an original song with the group for a quick performance at the end of each workshop.

The weekend was a wonderful opportunity for neighbors, creatives, and nonprofits to gather, share stories, and celebrate the good happening all around us. Kirby’s visit reminded us how music and community go hand-in-hand and that both have the power to uplift, unite, and ignite change.
