Detention for Writers
Detention doesn’t sound like a good thing. Most of us probably don’t have good memories of it back in high school. But consider - when was the last time you had access to a quiet place, with no talking allowed, where you’re not permitted to use your phone, and where all you have to do is focus on doing that work you need to get done? Nowadays, it doesn’t sound so much like a punishment.
That was published author, screenwriter, and standup comedian Bridget Foley’s concept when she created Writers’ Detention Workshops, now being held every Thursday at 5:30 PM in the PLAY Studio. If you’ve been meaning to write but just can’t find a time and place in your schedule to commit to it, this is the place. Sign up here for one of the next four sessions!
When you arrive at a Writers’ Detention Workshop, you’ll hand over your phone to the detention monitor and then sit down with your laptop or notebook for ninety minutes of silent writing. Write whatever it is you want - novels, screenplays, poetry, essays, business plan - anything that you’ve been putting off because you just can’t find the time to commit.
After ninety minutes, you’ll put down what you’re writing and have time to talk with your fellow writers. Get advice and feedback, or just get to know people and shoot the breeze.
Last night was the first night of Writers’ Workshop! If you’re not signed up yet, we still have many more sessions planned that you can sign up for here: JUMP Workshops: Writer's Detention Workshop Series
